"My father cursed me with the good curse of boating," said Captain Brett Sause of Maryland's Eastern Shore, explaining his love for life afloat. It's a story that so many of us can relate to.
But Captain Brett is not your typical weekend boater.
His high pressure day job is in financial planning for a major wealth management company in Eastern Maryland, where he works with clients from all across the US. Naturally, after a long day with all of that responsibility on his shoulders, Captain Brett heads to the water to de-stress.
But just not always in the way you might assume, either.
"I have a 100-ton Master's License with a Commercial Towing endorsement," he explained. "In some of my spare time, I volunteer as a Reserve Captain on the Oxford-Bellevue ferry, which is the oldest privately-owned ferry in the US. It's an interesting gig that has allowed me to meet all kinds of people."
In addition to his captain's license, Brett is a certified instructor with the National Safe Boating Council, helping boaters get on the water safely and enjoyably.
Brett firmly credits his father with his love affair with boating and the sea. "We would go fishing, crabbing, or simply cruising every weekend. Being my father's son meant getting up most Saturday mornings and going crabbing with my dad. He taught me everything I needed to know on the water. Apart from obviously how to crab, he taught me things that today are missing for a lot of boaters, like boating safety, the importance of lifejackets and a general respect for the sea."
Brett's father passed away at the young age of 55, when Brett was only nineteen years old, but his passion for boating had already been firmly passed on to his son. "Being able to go out, set your crab pots and catch your lunch or dinner was just the best. He got me into it and boating, and it has stuck ever since."
After selling their center console from another brand, Brett and his wife Molly were in the market for a replacement. "I was heavily shopping around online, looking at boats in every free minute I had. It was ultimately Molly who first fell in love with the online pics of the boat we'd end up buying".
That boat is a Pursuit OS 355 Offshore Series, and as much as Brett loves the boat, Molly is a particularly big fan. "Our previous boat had no cabin or sleeping facility, whereas the Pursuit checked all our boxes for what we wanted in a boat. Molly loved the layout, the galley, and the fully enclosed head. She also thoroughly enjoys the forward berth. She felt the motorized table in the bow that converts into a berth was a genius design." The couple enjoyed their first night onboard the boat on July 4th, 2026 and have vowed to do many more.
In honor of Molly's love for the boat, Brett named their new OS 355 after her. 'Molly Kate' is now proudly part of the couple's daily routine, taking them on luxurious cruises wherever their hearts desire. In future, Brett hopes to start a small charter business onboard Molly Kate as well. "I'll take clients sightseeing to the lighthouses around the coast, for example, to waterfront restaurants and even fishing."
While he loves the whole boat, Brett is especially thrilled with his boat's suite of Garmin electronics. "I'm an electronics junkie. My previous boat had Raymarine electronics, which I never found great comfort in. I refitted it with Garmin electronics after only one season. Molly gave me strict instructions therefore, that our next boat should not suffer the same expensive fate! The fact that our new OS 355 already has Garmin electronics both reassured her and was a big seller for me, because I'm a big fan of Garmin. It's my favorite brand, for a lot of reasons."
The Garmin suite is not his only highlight, however. "I also love the retractable sun shade, and the aft seating in the cockpit is very, very well done. Frankly, there's no single feature that wins versus another feature. For example, all my friends comment on how magnificent the view through this windshield in, with no mullions blocking the view. The windshield is massive, and with no obstructions to your view, it's almost like watching a movie. It's incredible from a user perspective, and from a safety perspective it's amazing."
Captain Brett and Molly are busy planning the adventures they look forward to embarking on with their new Pursuit OS 355 Offshore. "We love Chesapeake Bay with all that it provides. Whether that is great food, cruising, or going out to see a lighthouse, there is a lot to offer. So with this bigger boat, we are looking forward to getting into cruising Annapolis, Cape Charles, etc. Our ultimate goal is to navigate down the ICW. We'll do our best to take about five or six weeks off in January 2027 and hopefully get all the way to Charleston."
In closing, he explained how Pursuit's build-quality has reassured him and Molly that their new boat is comfortably capable of the trips they are planning with it. "This boat was built right; put together incredibly well. The finishes are great, using high-quality materials, and the creature comforts are fantastic. I'm not at all disappointed in any aspect of this boat's finish or quality, it makes me feel very comfortable. While this is my first Pursuit, I might very well get another one in the future."
